David Fleenor

David Fleenor is an accomplished spiritual care educator, researcher, and consultant with a passion for empowering healthcare chaplains. A board-certified chaplain and certified clinical pastoral educator, he is the President of Fleenor Consulting LLC. This firm specializes in consulting with healthcare organizations to provide patients and their families with high-quality, evidence-based spiritual care and education. With his experience and expertise in Clinical Pastoral Education and spiritual care, combined with a commitment to research, he provides innovative and effective consultation about spiritual health care that meets the needs of patients and their families. His numerous peer-reviewed publications reflect his dedication to promoting evidence-based spiritual care.

David is the Founding Manager of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Stony Brook Medicine. Under his leadership, Stony Brook established a new ACPE-accredited CPE program in November 2022. David is also a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Family, Population, and Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook’s Renaissance School of Medicine, where he teaches about spirituality and health.

David is a contract educator for ArchCare’s CPE program in New York City. Previously, he served as the Director of Education for the Center for Spirituality and Health at Mount Sinai, overseeing Mount Sinai’s Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs. He was also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he successfully integrated spirituality into all four years of the medical school curriculum in required courses and developed and taught a Spiritual Health elective.

David is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Health Sciences at Rush University under the mentorship of Dr. George Fitchett, Professor and Director of Research in the Department of Religion Health and Human Values. His dissertation focuses on designing a curriculum for a new graduate degree specifically for healthcare chaplains. David was awarded the 2023 ACPE Innovation in Research and Spiritual Care Grant to fund his dissertation research. Notably, as one of fifteen applicants, he received the largest award making him one of only four recipients of this prestigious grant.

As an Episcopal priest, David serves at the Church of the Ascension in Brooklyn, NY. He resides in New York City with his wife, his teenage stepdaughter, and their Maltese puppy.
